up on the roof of la Catedral

Today was an alright day. I got up an hour early so I could take a shower, but I never made it in. With 6 people in the apartment and all on the same schedule, bathroom time is not easy to come by. Once we get the hang of it though we will work it out better. We usually don't all get ready at the same time (some shower at night, some in the morning, some during the day) but once in a while we all seem to want to shower at the same time. Hopefully it won't happen too often.
This morning for our sketching class we visited 3 plazas in the gothic quarter (Placa del Rei, Placa de Sant Felip Neri, and Placa del Pi). They are about a 15 minute walk fom studio and each is only a few minutes apart. We had to sketch our journey through the 3 plazas and our experience on the journey. I think this class may help me improve my drawing simply because what I am drawing is so incredible and is so easy to stare at for a long time. At the end of the class, Eugena took us to the Catedral de Barcelona and we took the elevator to the top of the tower. When we got of elevator (it sounded like the Predator roller coaster as we were going up) we found ourselves on the roof of the Cathedral. There was a lot of construction materials up on the roof (the Cathedral has been under renovation for decades and the locals complain because they never see any work being done on it) but the view was not ruined. I took several pictures and a couple videos looking out onto the city. We were up there at noon when all the bells of the churches went off to announce the changing hour. It was amazing.

On the way back to studio, I stopped by Corte Ingles to see if I could find a backpack for my lap top. I found a couple, but none that really caught my eye. I also stopped at a couple places to see if I could pick up a few Tshirts. The only Tshirts I can find are either very strange or say "New York City" or "Rocky Mountain" or some other English word. I did find a shirt that said "Rochester, NY." I was going to buy it because it was right next to a rack that was 3.50 E but the rack this shirt was on was 30.00 E! There are a lot of sales going on still so I am hoping to go shopping this weekend and buy some Tshirts. I then stopped at McDonalds real quick for a fast lunch. The burgers basically taste the same. Ben and Rob found a cheap bocadilla bar right by studio so we are going to start going there when we don't have time to go back to the apartment. They said the sandwiches are twice the size of the ones we usually see and are only 2 E, which is a pretty fair price.

During studio, Monica and I worked on laying out our boards for our plaza analysis. We got some good feedback from Christi and Professor Vidal.

After studio we had our first firm visit. We visited a firm in the gothic quarter, about a 20 minute walk away. It is a pretty famous firm. They have worked all over the world and have done some very impressive projects. It is a fairly big firm so the owner of the firm did not give us the tour. Instead the public relation lady gave us the tour and told us about the firm. She told us how so many people try to intern in Barcelona that no one in the city pays their interns. It would be a great city to intern in, but they don't treat the interns very well, since there is such a high demand and interns are easily replacable.

Ben, Rob, and I went grocery shopping afterwards and then came back to the apartment. We had some bocadillas and then started some work. I did not go to studio because the work I need to do is on my computer and in my sketchbook so I got to stay in tonight. I do need to find a backpack for my lap top here though quick because it is not fun to walk back and forth with the strap over my shouler. It's about a 10 minute walk to studio and the computer gets heavy and uncomfortable in that time.
